York UK 2023 - BEST 15 things to do on a York day trip. York is a beautiful, medieval city in North Yorkshire that makes for an excellent day trip or UK city break. In this video we will share with you 15 of the many things you can do in on your visit to York. I have added chapters to the video so if you would like to skip ahead to a particular section then you can do so easily. We hope you enjoy this York, England, The Shambles to Jorvik Viking Centre 4K Historic Walking Tour UK. We start this tour of York, England in the medieval street known as The Shambles. A favourite with Harry Potter fans due to the magic inspired shops along its route, this leads us into Shambles Market before heading to King's Square - site of York's Chocolate Story. We follow Low Petergate to discover the beautiful Gothic Cathedral and on to the Jorvik Viking Centre. Join us and stroll through the streets of the old town centre, where we see the many, restaurants, cafes and traditional pubs. Our 4K historic walking tour finishes at the River Ouse, just outside of the old town. York is a walled city in northeast England that was founded by the ancient Romans. Its huge 13th-century Gothic cathedral, York Minster, has medieval stained glass and 2 functioning bell towers. The City Walls form a walkway on both sides of the River Ouse. The Monk Bar gate houses an exhibition tracing the life of 15th-century Plantagenet King Richard III. Plan a perfect day trip itinerary to York, a city of history, culture and heritage and boasts some of the prettiest streets in England. Roman ruins, towering cathedrals, and narrow shopping streets are combined with contemporary shopping and dining to give this city its vibrant and energetic feel. A day trip to York is normally enough to see its highlights, and this is a popular destination for travelers planning an itinerary from London to Edinburgh on the train, and wish to break up the journey along the way. York is also a great starting point for day trip tours of the surrounding area. Tourist England’s suggested itinerary for a one-day experience in York: Begin the day at York Minster, which is conveniently located just a 10-minute short walk from the train station. York Minster is the largest medieval Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and attracts thousands of visitors each year. The cathedral towers over the city and is a real architectural achievement. Enter inside the Minster (entrance fee £10 per adult) where you’ll find an impressive series of stained glass windows, breathtaking calvings, naves and pillars. For an additional £5, (recommended) you can climb the steep steps to the top of York Minster tower, with breathtaking views over the City. There’s also a series of fascinating underground displays and exhibitions, detailing the history and conservation work that took place over the past decades. Head out of York Minster and into the group of narrow streets known as The Shambles. Local residents are very proud of these narrow windy streets which are filled with lots of interesting local shops, cafes and restaurants and is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat or pick up a souvenir. Shambles Market is open daily, with an interesting selection of stalls and produce. Head to the riverfront to see the pretty River Ouse, and perhaps go for a River Cruise, with 1-hour boat trips operated by YorkBoat, accompanied by a live guided commentary. The cruise departs and returns to the same spot by Lendal Bridge and from here, one of the most popular things to do is to walk a section of the Roman City Walls – our favourite section is from Lendal Bridge all the way past Mickelgate Bar and continuing to Skeldergate Bridge. A short walk from Skeldergate lies several world-class museums. York Castle Museum looks at the changing English way of life from Jacobean times to present modern-day Britain. Next to it lies Clifford’s Tower, the oldest remaining part of York Castle with great views over the City. 24-hour York hop on hop off bus is the perfect way to get around the city. Walking around York's City walls York's city walls were originally built by the Romans in 71 AD, and have been rebuilt and extended over the centuries. The walls are nearly 3 miles long, and include four main gates and 39 towers. During medieval times, the walls were improved with additional gates and fortifications, and served as a means of defence for the city. In the 19th century, the walls were restored and made accessible to the public as a popular walking route. The walls also played a role in the Siege of York during the English Civil War, and sustained damage during World War II bombings. The History of New York in 12 Minutes There were two explorers who first stumbled across the New York lands but can’t be credited with doing much upon their arrival. In 1524, a French-employed Italian explorer by the name of Giovanni da Verrazzano was sailing along the Atlantic when he found himself in what we know today as the New York Harbor and eventually modern-day Manhattan. He wrote of his exploration but did little more in the way of colonizing New York than that, and the same could be said for Jacques Cartier, a French explorer who made similar explorations in 1535.
