In the last episode, we learned to count in Binary. Today, we learn how to count in Hex, and then take a look at ASCII and Unicode which will help us understand how the computers store other types of information. ASCII and Unicode are definitely things you will come across as programmers, so you may as well learn the basics of it today. Rest assured we are getting to that. I've crafted this series to give you insights into a lot of things that will ultimately give you an advantage when it comes to programming. Why am I doing this course? Well, I decided to create a course to teach the basics of programming from scratch. But at a deeper level than most courses, starting with many of the things that are not discussed in other programming courses like binary, machine code, etc. Don't worry, I am not going to go into crazy deep levels with hardware, but enough so you really understand how this stuff works, before we move onto the programming side. Eventually, we will delve into higher-level languages including Java, Python, C, and Kotlin and by the end of the series you will be in a good position to move to another programming course and have a good basic knowledge of how computers work under the hood, and more importantly, how the computer runs the code you create. ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. In computers, ASCII represents a total of 128 characters. These characters are included in a Table called ASCII table. One of the key points is ASCII uses a 7-bit format to represent a character. As 2^7 is 128, that's why the ASCII table has 128 characters. Unlike ASCII, Unicode uses a 16-bit format to represent characters. This is the reason why Unicode can represent more number of characters including the existing one. Unicode can represent 2^16 = 65536 characters. For example, μ is not in the ASCII table. μ can be represented by Unicode not ASCII. Like here I have written μ the character in Unicode.
In this lesson, we introduce Unicode code points and one of the most common ways to encode them - UTF-8. We then show how 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-byte UTF-8 encodings work and how we can encode our values to one of them. Take aways: At the completion of this lesson, each student should be able to: • explain what a Unicode code point is, • represent a given Unicode code point, • explain the relationship between Unicode code points and UTF-8 encoding, and • encode a Unicode code point in UTF-8. #utf8 #unicode #encoding
