Presidential hopeful Ko Wen-je has ignited a firestorm, by saying he will restart talks with China over the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement. The controversial treaty was never ratified, after sparking a wave of protests known as the 2014 Sunflower Student Movement. Ko says he was never opposed to the treaty itself, only to the secretive negotiations that brokered it. His remarks have drawn anger from local politicians, who accuse him of changing his tune to win votes. Miao Poya Taipei City councilor (Social Democratic Party) I’ll have to apologize to him for misunderstanding him all this time. It turns out that Ko Wen-je is not opposed to the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement after all. If he is elected president, he will push for it again. Years ago he rode on the wave of opposition to the treaty, going from a doctor to a mayor – we should regard this as a beautiful historical misunderstanding. Presidential hopeful Ko Wen-je said he intends to revive the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement. He said that his past opposition to the treaty was not because of the treaty itself, but because of its black-box negotiations. Wu Cheng, who protested against the treaty in the Sunflower Student Movement, confronted Ko over his stance. Wu Cheng New Taipei City legislative candidate (DPP) Back in 2014, and even earlier in 2013, Ko Wen-je didn’t put it quite like that. He compared it to tightening a screw, saying that once the screws were attached, they would only get tighter and tighter. Ko Wen-je emphasized that once the agreement was signed, Taiwan’s top-tier medical talent would go to China, and low-end medical talent would see their salaries go down in Taiwan. So why has Ko Wen-je changed his position? Ko previously testified at public hearings in his capacity as a doctor. He spoke about the treaty’s adverse impact, in remarks that have come back to haunt him. On social media, New Power Party Legislator Chiu Hsien-chih criticized supporters of the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement, urging the people of Taiwan to reject such candidates. Chiu Hsien-chih New Power Party lawmaker It wasn’t just the black-box negotiations that drove 500,000 people out onto the streets. The train of thought was quite clear. The problem was the China factor. Don’t distort the protest movement just because you need to bring in deep-blue votes. Hung Sun-han DPP lawmaker Ko Wen-je, quit playing dumb. The true goal of the Cross-Strait Service Trade Agreement was unification. Now that China’s economy is on the decline and its unemployment rate is soaring high, the only reason I can think of is that Chairman Ko wants to win Beijing’s support in order to poach voters from the blue camp. Concerns are mounting that the treaty will return and become a tool for the CCP’s unification campaign. Politicians from across party lines are speaking out against Ko, urging him not to court China for the sake of the election.

He is also an Associate Professor and a senior ICU staff specializing in external trauma, critical care, and organ transplants. On November 2014, Dr. Wen-Je Ko, an independent and a political novice, was elected as the mayor of Taipei City, Taiwan. As a surgeon who had served as the head of the Intensive Care Unit at National Taiwan University Hospital for 17 years, Mayor Ko brings a much different set of skills and new thinking to his task than other politicians. Mayor Ko says he aims to overcome the ideological obstacles of being associated with a political party and directly appeals to the needs of the people. American think-tank researcher Bonnie Glaser has come out to set the record straight. She had recently said that China’s leadership is not familiar with Hou Yu-ih, the KMT’s nominee for next year’s presidential election, and is more inclined to support Taiwan People’s Party nominee Ko Wen-je, who has met with Chinese politicians. Those remarks were later interpreted by Ko as Glaser agreeing with him that he is the person best able to communicate with both China and the U.S. Some media outlets also reported that Glaser "leaned toward support for Ko" in the presidential election. However, Glaser has come out to tell CNA that she did not allude to Ko being best able to communicate with China, and that she meant that since China had contact with Ko while he was Taipei mayor, Beijing was more familiar with him. She also tweeted that there was a "deliberate twisting of [her] words," and that "Ko is dishonest." The former Taipei mayor shot back saying that Glaser was "flustered" and was hiding her actual stance.
Taiwan People’s Party Chair Ko Wen-je is gearing up for his presidential bid in 2024. While taking part in the Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage, the former Taipei mayor announced during an interview that he’ll be heading to the U.S. in April. On Sunday, TPP Secretary General Tom Chou confirmed that his boss will be going on a three-week American tour. The Taiwan People’s Party recently caused quite a stir with its new campaign slogan: “Vote White, Vote Right.” After the slogan went up online, it was criticized for its white supremacist connotations. The party’s presidential candidate, Ko Wen-je, says the controversy stems from a cultural difference. Even so, the TPP has removed the line from its official website. TPP presidential candidate Ko Wen-je made an appearance in Kaohsiung on Tuesday. The visit came after his English campaign slogan, “Vote White, Vote Right,” raised an outcry over its racist connotations. U.S. media outlet BNN Breaking picked up the story, noting that Ko is a controversial figure known for his contentious remarks. Ko Wen-je TPP presidential candidate This is a cultural difference. In Taiwan, it’s not problematic. But abroad, it is. In the future, we’ll get real foreigners to work on our websites. A Taipei councilor said Ko underestimates the cultural awareness of Taiwanese people. Lin Yen-feng Taipei councilor (DPP) Just because the TPP themselves don’t get it doesn’t mean all of Taiwan doesn’t get it. They are completely insulting the intelligence of Taiwanese people. Having a presidential candidate like him speaking on issues of global diplomacy would be a disaster for Taiwan. Miao Po-ya Taipei councilor (SDP) Ko urgently needs to find aides who are qualified in international affairs, diplomacy, defense, national security and matters like that. Truly qualified aides with both talent and morals, and not just a PR team that diverts attention away from blunders made throughout the day. Ko has a long record of gaffes. In 2015, U.K. transport minister Susan Kramer presented Ko with a pocket watch. When a reporter asked about the gift, Ko said he might give it away or to sell it to a scrap metal dealer for cash. In 2019, after returning from Israel, he landed in controversy with another remark. Ko Wen-je (February 2019) Taipei mayor In Israel, they arranged for us to visit the World Holocaust Remembrance Center. The greatest publicity for Jewish people internationally has been that 6 million of them were murdered during Hitler’s time. More recently, in June, Ko told Japanese media that Taiwanese fishers did not want to claim the Diaoyutai Islands for Taiwan, but only wanted to fish near them. Ko’s campaign slogan is just another blunder on the list.
Turning now to the election. Presidential candidate Ko Wen-je met up with former President Chen Shui-bian in Tainan on Wednesday. The ex-president posted a photo of the two together, saying they spoke about the economy and Taiwan’s wealth gap. The visit is seen as Ko’s latest effort to court deep-green supporters. But a DPP lawmaker says that no matter his efforts, Ko will not be the choice of the nativist faction. Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Ko Wen-je campaigned in Tainan on Wednesday, touting his political achievements. He stopped by a temple before giving a university lecture. He also had a meeting with former President Chen Shui-bian. On social media, Chen shared a photo of himself shaking hands with Ko, and wrote that Ko did not come seeking campaign support. Instead, Chen said, Ko visited in his capacity as the first convener of Chen’s medical team. Ko also sought advice on how to strengthen the economy and close the wealth gap. With this predecessor, Ko – whether in his role as Taipei mayor or as presidential candidate – can engage in exchanges regarding political experiences and thoughts. Ko’s office said the two met for roughly an hour, and that Ko mainly consulted Chen about city and national governance. But the visit is seen as Ko’s latest attempt to court the deep-green camp. At his May 20 press conference announcing his candidacy, there were members of Chen’s medical team in the audience, including a physician and the team’s spokeswoman. Also present were former Taiwan Solidarity Union Chairman Shu Chin-chiang and former TSU Legislator Hsu Chung-hsin. Political watchers say Ko is working to reconnect with his deep-green roots, to expand his voter base. A DPP lawmaker says it won’t work. Hung Sun-han DPP lawmaker These past few years, Ko Wen-je has pushed the line that the two sides of the strait are one family. Any partners with a nativist consciousness would be very aware of that. Ko Wen-je’s long-time stance on cross-strait affairs will not make him the choice of the nativist faction. As Ko continues his campaign, the green camp is urging supporters not to be misled.

Over in Japan, the Taiwan People’s Party presidential candidate Ko Wen-je on Monday had a busy day. He met with 13 pro-Taiwan lawmakers close with former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, as well as members of a parliamentary group with Taiwan. During the meeting, Ko expressed that he hoped Japan would help Taiwan with its bid to join the CPTPP trade bloc. Besides the lawmakers, Ko also met with former Prime Minister Noda Yoshihiko. Ko Wen-je Taiwan People’s Party chairman They want to phase out nuclear energy by 2030, but there are still some practical matters. The matter of rules on food products from places affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster should be handled following global standards. Japanese people can eat those products, and the Japanese government deems them safe to eat. So there’s no reason they can’t be exported and eaten in Taiwan too. Noda Yoshihiko Former Japanese prime minister Mr. Ko Wen-je is someone who can lead people. We’ve not met for long, but I can sense that. In the morning, Ko had given a talk at Waseda University. A Chinese student in the audience later asked him about his previous comments that both sides of the strait were one family and if that remained part of his cross-strait policy. Ko replied that he would rather see good family relations than bad family relations, adding that engaging with each other was better than cutting off contact.
Over the course of his career as Taipei City councilor, the DPP’s Wang Shih-chien gave 32 different presents to then Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je. Including things as varied as suitcases and foldable bicycles, these presents were gifted to Ko facetiously to criticize his municipal policies. But reports have emerged that Ko is planning to put all the presents up for auction. Wang seems heartbroken. Chen Chih-han Ko Wen-je campaign spokesperson Besides the attention it will garner, we also hope that Ko’s supporters and everyone else can come and have a good time together. Ko Wen-je hasn’t had time to use the bicycle he received, so he might donate it. There is no fixed plan set yet. But whether donated or put up for auction, we hope that all these good items can be shared with more people. Wang Shih-chien Taipei councilor (DPP) Is the Taiwan People’s Party so strapped for cash? I don’t get it. I can describe him in five words. Sincere feelings become heartless apathy. When you break up with your partner, you throw their stuff away, or you burn it. But who would auction off their ex’s stuff! Wang invited reporters to his office at the Taipei City Council to show them some of the gifts that Ko returned to him. They include a suitcase that Wang gave to Ko to pack up his things to run for president. There’s also an inflatable horse to remind Ko to keep a distance from the CCP. Though Wang will soon be off on his legislative campaign, he says he has also prepared a farewell mystery gift for the current mayor of Taipei, Chiang Wan-an.

Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je today joined critics of the Universiade organizing committee, in objecting to their use of the words "Chinese Taipei" to refer to Taiwan, in an English-language handbook for foreign athletes. Ko says the booklet''s writers have "gone overboard", and that when even the geographical name of the island of Taiwan is changed to "Chinese Taipei", the result is "bizarre to read". Taiwan People’s Party Chairman Ko Wen-je went to his party’s headquarters on Monday, to officially register for the 2024 presidential race. Reporters asked him about a potential coalition between his party and the KMT. He responded that politics should not be about backroom deals. Let’s hear from him. Gou and DPP presidential candidate Lai even shared a stage to deliver speeches. In his remarks, Lai stressed that he was a pacifist, but that the pursuit of peace required strength and determination to defend the country. They exchange a handshake at the opening of a religious procession in Kinmen. Vice President Lai Ching-te and Hon Hai founder Terry Gou encountered each other in Kinmen. He also had some words of advice for Taiwan''s central government.
