The Japanese Wolf was irradiated and most believe is extinct, but perhaps it's left a legacy with one of the most primitive Japanese dog breeds who developed on the island where the wolf remained the longest before being annihilated. Many believe the Shikoku is the most primitive all of the Japanese breeds and has wolf like characteristics through his extremely primitive DNA. Did he descend from the Japanese wolf and how long ago was that? Does this make him a wolfdog? Find out today... These are my Top 10 Favorite Things To Do In Shikoku, Japan: - 10. Bike ride over the epic Kurushima Bridge. This is one portion of the popular 70 kilometer Shimanami Kaido cycling route and the views along the way are absolutely stunning. - 9. Kayak the Shimanto River Another exciting sightseeing experience for the active traveler is a kayak or canoe trip down the Shimanto River. Said to be the “last clear stream of Japan” because it’s remote from any major cities and has no dams, The Shimanto River and surrounding area is as peaceful of a scene as it gets. - 8. Tokushima Ramen Changing gears for some culinary highlights is Tokushima Ramen in Tokushima City. It is a combination of Tonkotsu (or pork bone) broth and Shoyu (or soy-based) broths with pork slices, green onions, bamboo shoots, and a topped with a raw egg. It’s rich, a little sweet, and very filling. - 7. Katsuo Tataki & Green Tea Beer In the south central Shikoku city of Kochi, their speciality is Katsuo Tataki. Bonito or Skipjack Tuna are seared on the outside over a sweet-smelling straw fire, sliced and eaten as Sashimi. A bonus recommendation is to try the Green tea beer close by in the Hirome Market in downtown Kochi City. - 6. Explore the Iya Valley Back outdoors it’s into the Iya Valley. One of the most incredibly green landscapes I’ve ever seen and home to the famous vine bridges. It’s thought that these vine bridges of Iya Valley were created in the 12th century by one clan of samurai warriors after a big loss - If they were pursued, they could simply cut the vines. For a more secure line, and another scenic perspective, you can go zip lining right over the valley itself. - 5. Matsuyama Castle If you’re a history buff, the Matsuyama Castle in Matsuyama is a must-see. Originally constructed on top of Mount Katsuyama in 1602, it’s one Japan’s original 12 castles. Inside there’s exhibits of its history and the feudal period, and at it’s windows - the views of Matsuyama from above are beautiful. - 4. Have Tea at Ritsurin Garden Speaking of beautiful, the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu is one of the most pristine patches of landscapes you’ll come across. Dating all the back to the early 17th century, the property of an old Feudal lord is one of the most famous historical gardens in all of Japan. Make sure you stop into the tea house for a traditional matcha to get the full experience of this place. - 3. Visit the Yusuhara Library Another incredibly tranquil setup is the Yusuhara Community Library in the Kochi Prefecture. The Library was designed by famous Japanese Architect, Kengo Kuma, and includes plenty of reading space, a grand piano, and even a rock climbing wall. The architecture inside the library blends perfectly with the natural surroundings outside. - 2. Learn Local Japanese Crafts from Shikoku A few moments that I’ll remember most from my time in Shikoku was meeting and working alongside some of the most interesting local artists. I made paper the traditional way up in the mountains of the Kochi Prefecture. I Dyed indigo at an old indigo dyer’s property in Tokushima. I created the most incredible keepsake from scratch with an old school blacksmith. I danced my way into making udon in the heart of udon country. - 1. The Henro Buddhist Pilgrimage The number one thing I would recommend doing in Shikoku, Japan is to experience the iconic Buddhist Pilgrimage of henro (Ohenro) throughout the island. - There you have it, 10 things to do in Shikoku, Japan - a place that is still relatively undiscovered to most travelers who come to Japan, and for that reason - I would get here before it’s too late! - ————— ▼ABOUT SHIKOKU/四国ツーリズム創造機構メインページ 🤍 ▼ABOUT HENRO/四国ツーリズム創造機構遍路紹介ページ 🤍 — ► Check out Tyler's Channel - 🤍 — POPULAR QUESTIONS & RESOURCES: ► My Favorite Camera Gear & Travel Accessories - 🤍 ► How to Start a Blog - 🤍 ► Where I Get My Music From - 🤍 ► 10 Books That Changed My Life - 🤍 ► How to Plan a Trip Abroad - 🤍 ► How To Make Friends While Traveling - 🤍 ► Get $40 OFF Your First AirBnB - 🤍 — FOLLOW ME: + INSTAGRAM: 🤍 + FACEBOOK: 🤍 + TWITTER: 🤍 + SNAPCHAT: 🤍GarethChat + WEB: 🤍 — P.S. Shikoku is the smallest of Japan's four main islands. It's bordered on the north by the Seto Inland Sea, and the south by the Pacific Ocean. The island is home to Mt. Ishizuchi, the highest mountain in western Japan, and a circular pilgrimage trail visiting 88 Buddhist temples. The rivers and mountains of Shikoku make it an ideal destination for adventure travel.

Starting the shikoku pilgrimage in Japan with just a touch of rain. It was a setback but I think it may have helped to get an absolute crap day out of the way in the very beginning. It taught me a few things, including, that I don’t actually have to be here. Day 3 today was beautiful and I want to be here thankfully. Distance walked so far (according to phone): 46 km Distance from Temple 1 (according to google map): 36.8 km Apologies if the edit is funky or worse than even my low standards, traveling light and editing solely in my phone.

With the lapping waves of the Pacific Ocean greeted by silt carried downstream from the carved mountains, Kōchi reminds us of the deep connection between rivers and oceans. From the high vantage point on its southern tip, the solitary Cape Muroto Lighthouse looks guard over the infinite expanse of the blue ocean, greeting ships and whales alike. Henro House website: 🤍 FAQ: Does this map replace the Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide book? NO! This map can only help you determine which routes you want to walk as well as keep you on route using GPS. You should still buy the route guide book. The route guide book contains a huge amount of information that is not on this map. What is GAIA GPS? GAIA GPS is a hiking application that can be viewed on your computer or phone. It uses real time GPS tracking to show where you are in the world to help keep you on route. You can download and use the application on your phone for free. What do the route colours mean? Red = busy road. Black = quiet road. Green = easy trail. Blue = moderate trail. Purple = difficult trail. How do you know where the busy roads are? I hate busy roads and before I took my pilgrimage I spent countless hours using Google sattelite view and Google street maps to find the busy roads. When I took my pilgrimage I also mentally noted where the busy roads were. That being said, depending on the time of day, some busy roads might be quiet and some quiet roads might be busy. How do you know the trail difficulty levels? This is subjective. I enjoy walking trails and walked as many of them as possible while I was on my pilgrimage. In general, if the trail is mostly flat, wide and well maintained, it is easy. If the trail is steep or pooly maintained or technical, it is difficult. Moderate trails are everything in between. How accurate is this map? The roads are mostly accurate. I had GPS tracking enabled while walking my pilgrimage so many of the trails are quite accurate. Some of the trails are where the hiking application thinks they are and some of the trails are my best guess based on sattelite and streetview maps. Always use common sense when using GPS applications, if it doesnt feel or look correct then turn around! The most accurate trail maps can be found in the Shikoku Japan 88 Route Guide book Where did you find these routes? Most of the routes are found in the route guide book. I also used the Japanese route guide book to find some. Some routes I found on other peoples guide maps. Finally, I found some of the routes on my own and enjoyed walking them during my pilgrimage.
In 1858, in an unassuming town in the southwest of France, a 14-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous claimed she had 18 encounters with the Virgin Mary. Since then, Lourdes has become one of the holiest Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world, visited annually by more than five million people who come in search of healing from its sacred waters. Since the end of World War II, soldiers from around the world have journeyed to Lourdes seeking healing and unity with one another at a week-long gathering known as the International Military Pilgrimage.

An amazing experience walking 1200 km along the 88 temple pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan. I walked this pilgrimage fundraising for a charity close to my heart who facilitate free mental health programs to youth struggling. We raised $2213.37 for Heal.ed Tribe in the Gold Coast to support young people! I am an adventure seeker and a changemaker so I will continue to go on adventures. Because of the overwhelming attention my pilgrimage videos received on Instagram (60,000 new followers!?) I have decided to keep documenting my travels and move them to YouTube. I aim to travel to less known places and interact with the local people. If you like slow travel, come along for the ride! (...bring snacks!) 💛 In this video you are going to be pleasantly surprised by many things. Some of them will be: The kindness of the local people The beautiful countryside of Japan How being alone with yourself is incredibly healing 🥾 But… wait! I have many questions about the pilgrimage…. Please write them below but I will try to answer some below. The Shikoku pilgrimage route (or Shikoku Henro) is one of the few circular-shaped pilgrimages in the world. It includes 88 “official” temples and numerous other sacred sites where the Buddhist priest Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) is believed to have trained or have spent time during the 9th Century. If walked, the entire route is about 1,200 kilometers long. This pilgrimage provides the an opportunity to reflect on one's life and to change for the better. People’s motives for making this pilgrimage are varied. For example, some come for religious reasons, some to pray for healing or safety in the home, or some in memory of those who have passed away. In addition, some come just to get away from regular life, some for recreation, or some to spend time alone in reflection and to find oneself. For people today, it is being re-discovered as a healing journey. This pilgrimage should not be considered as a stamp-gathering relay, but as a religious journey. The local people will welcome you for your decision to embark on the Shikoku pilgrimage. ●Walking: This will take about 6 weeks (average 30km/day) and cost about 400,000 yen. This is the most traditional way, but it takes the most time and money. ●Charted bus: This will take 9-12 days and cost about 250,000 yen. There is a variety of bus plans provided by travel and bus companies and in each case an official guide (sendatsu) will accompany the group. At present, there are no bus tours available in foreign languages. If a foreign visitor would like to participate in a bus tour then sufficient Japanese ability is required. ●Car: This will take about 10 days and cost about 140,000 yen. You can rent a car from the closest train station or airport, but make sure that you are familiar with the rules of the road. It might be possible to request a car with a navigational system that has audio guidance in English or another foreign language. 🎒My packing list: Osprey Eja 48L backpack Sleeping mat Sleeping bag Inflatable pillow Sleeping bag liner Lightweight tent Powerbank 1 x leggings 1 x hiking pants/shorts convertible 2 x shirts 1 x pjs 3 underwear 2 sports bras 1 x sunglasses 3 x socks 1 x hiking boots 1 x sandals Toiletries Iphone Insta360 Pilgrim essentials: shirt, stamp book, bamboo sledge hat, osamefuda booklet Rain jacket Fleece Buff Knife Airlite towel Tripod Spork Charging adapter and cables Knee brace Travel hula hoop Swimmers Emergency blanket Magnesium powder Fisocrem ❤️Helpful Tips? Henro.org has a great map Download maps.me in advance for backup Buy the Shikoku 88 guidebook at the first temple gift shop Learn some Japanese if you are able before going (I wish I had known more!) Be respectful and always ask before doing If camping like I did never camp on private land and always ask permission Camping in Henro huts is generally allowed unless signed otherwise Always pick up your rubbish :) After my Instagram videos went viral alot of people asked for longer videos and in more detail so this is my first attempt at YouTube and I will be sharing more videos in the coming weeks about the pilgrimage and my next upcoming adventure in Europe!! But for now if you like the video and want to see more please subscribe because one day I would love to be able to make a living from doing this. And if I can’t I will still continue to adventure but not as much 😂 Also if you want to see more short clips about my travels and read all the comments from my community on the videos check out my Instagram account 🌞✨ 🤍heykiera_ _ If you want to support me so I can continue to share more adventures with you I have made a donation link below where you can support.
