In this video, we're going to be talking about some of the most common mistakes that people make when installing a NVMe SSD, and how to avoid them. We're also going to be going over some of the best ways to measure the performance of a NVMe SSD, and dispel some of the myths about NVMe PCIe speeds. If you're looking to install a NVMe SSD in your computer, then this video is for you! We'll cover everything from the basics of NVMe SSDs to the best way to install them. We'll also discuss some of the key factors to consider when choosing a NVMe SSD, and how to measure their performance. The process for installing is really easy but may vary depending on your motherboard - some have heatsinks and different screw setups. It's also worth checking your manual as you may find that not all the drives work the same way. NVMe installation is easy in theory but it's important to keep these things in mind: - Use the top spot where possible to ensure x4 PCIe lanes - Remove any plastic stickers from heatsinks and shields - Use thermal pads to disperse heat - If you install multiple drives this may reduce PCIe lanes available for your GPU - You may need to change settings in your BIOS - When installing in Windows use the Disk Management/Create a partition settings to set the drive up - Always benchmark to make sure it's running as it should be. M.2 SSDs are tiny, easy to install and super-fast but did you know that they come in two different form factors? There are indeed both SATA and PCIe varieties of M.2. They are both long and thin and look a bit like a stick of chewing gum. But they are different. Interface Many people think the alternative to M.2 SSDs are SATA 2.5” SSDs, and while the 2.5 inch portion is correct, SATA actually refers to the storage interface. SATA and PCIe, or PCIe NVMe, are both types of storage interface that an SSD can use. The primary difference between the two is performance and the protocol, or language, spoken by the SSD. The M.2 spec was designed to accommodate both a SATA and PCIe interface for SSDs. M.2 SATA SSDs will use the same controller currently on typical 2.5” SATA SSDs. M.2 PCIe SSDs will use a controller specifically designed to support the PCIe protocol. An M.2 SSD can only support one protocol, but some systems have M.2 sockets that can support either SATA or PCIe. An easy way to tell the difference between the two drives based on appearance alone is the notches in the connection. SATA M.2 drives will have two notches, while PCIe will only have one. Performance So what’s the difference between the two? The PCIe interface is generally faster, as the SATA 3.0 spec is limited to around 600MB/s maximum speed, while PCIe Gen 2 x2 lanes are capable of up to 1000MB/s. And if you think that’s a large difference, PCIe Gen 2 x4 lanes are capable of up to 2000MB/s, and Gen 3 x4 lanes of up to 4000MB/s. Not to say that speed is everything. M.2 SSDs using the SATA protocol will generally be compatible with a wider variety of systems and can be better supported in older models, plus they are usually more affordable when it comes to PCIe. Another thing to consider is that some motherboards don’t have enough PCIe connections to support multiple PCIe NVMe drives. You might have to decide on using the available connection between a graphics card or an NVMe SSD. Other times there may be PCIe lanes available but only a certain type of connection will be able to use NVMe devices at their full speed such as an M.2 connection. For example compare the Kingston A400 SATA SSD vs Kingston KC3000 PCIe NVMe SSD. The A400 has two key notches, comes in capacities up to 480 GB and has up to 500 MB/s read and 450 MKB/s write - all at an MSRP of under $50. The Kingston KC3000 on the other hand, has one key notch here on the side, comes in capacities up to 4TB and offers 7,000 MB/s read and write speeds. The starting price for this drive is $100. So to sum up - yes, M.2 SSDs can come in both SATA and PCIe NVMe varieties. PCIe is newer and faster, while SATA is more affordable and more widely compatible with older systems. What you choose is up to you, but I hope these basic guidelines helped a bit in your shopping journey. _ Got questions about the video or Kingston products? SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs, and HDDs are all types of storage devices commonly used in computers and other electronic devices. They differ in terms of technology, performance, and use cases. Let me explain each of them: 1. SATA SSD (Solid-State Drive): SATA SSDs are a type of storage device that uses the Serial ATA (SATA) interface to connect to a computer's motherboard. They are a faster and more reliable alternative to traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). SATA SSDs use NAND flash memory to store data, which is a type of non-volatile memory that retains data even when power is removed. Because of this, they provide significantly faster read and write speeds compared to HDDs. SATA SSDs are a good choice for general computing tasks, including operating system installation, software loading, and basic productivity applications. Advantages of SATA SSDs: - Faster performance compared to HDDs. - Lower power consumption and heat generation. - Silent operation due to absence of moving parts. Disadvantages of SATA SSDs: - Slower compared to NVMe SSDs, especially for intense workloads. - Limited by the SATA interface's bandwidth. 2. NVMe SSD (Non-Volatile Memory Express Solid-State Drive): NVMe SSDs are a newer generation of solid-state drives that use the NVMe protocol to connect to the computer's motherboard. Unlike SATA SSDs, which use the older and slower AHCI protocol, NVMe SSDs leverage the high-speed capabilities of PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slots. This results in significantly faster data transfer speeds and reduced latency compared to SATA SSDs. NVMe SSDs are well-suited for tasks that require high-speed data access, such as video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming. Advantages of NVMe SSDs: - Exceptionally high read and write speeds, ideal for data-intensive tasks. - Lower latency due to the efficient NVMe protocol. - Can take advantage of PCIe lanes for even greater speed. Disadvantages of NVMe SSDs: - Generally more expensive than SATA SSDs. - Higher power consumption compared to SATA SSDs (though still lower than HDDs). - Overkill for basic tasks that don't require high-speed data access. 3. HDD (Hard Disk Drive): HDDs are the traditional storage devices that have been used for decades. They use spinning disks (platters) coated with a magnetic material to store data. A read/write head accesses the data by moving over the spinning platters. HDDs are slower compared to SSDs due to the mechanical nature of their operation. They are still commonly used for mass storage and archival purposes due to their relatively lower cost per gigabyte compared to SSDs. Advantages of HDDs: - Larger storage capacities at a more affordable price. - Suitable for storing large files, media, and backups. - Established technology with a long history of use. Disadvantages of HDDs: - Slower read and write speeds compared to SSDs. - More susceptible to physical shock and damage due to moving parts. - Increased power consumption and heat generation compared to SSDs. In summary, SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs, and HDDs all serve different purposes based on their performance characteristics and use cases. SATA and NVMe SSDs offer faster speeds and reliability, while HDDs provide cost-effective mass storage. The choice between them depends on your specific needs, budget, and the performance requirements of your tasks. #nvmessd #satassd #hdd #ssdtest #speedtest #nvmesatahddssd #boottest #apptesting
